Significant research is underway to improve our understanding of the behavior of floor diaphragms, chords, and collectors in steel buildings under seismic demands and translate these findings to improved code provisions. This work is, in part, a response to the new alternative diaphragm design provisions developed and adopted in ASCE7-16. This session will report out on the latest findings from the Steel Diaphragm Innovation Initiative (steeli.org) and two National Science Foundation funded research efforts to address these issues.

Structural Optimization in Everyday Design Tasks

Experience in structural optimization is often the difference between ordinary design and good design. Engineers learn in schools how to solve problems which we are very good at. However, often there are many different solutions to a problem. Some are better from the other. Efficient design or structural optimization techniques are not frequently taught in schools. Engineers are left to self-experience to shape their efficient design capabilities. This session is provided for practicing engineers and teaching faculty to educate on techniques that not only save our clients’ money but also reduces carbon footprint, save natural resources and also save lives with through better than just an ordinary design.
